Peritonitis
Definition
Inflammation of the peritoneum, which is a serous sac that lines
the abdominal cavity and most of the viscera contained therein.
Causes
Inflamed viceral organ rupture, such as the appendix, will spread
the inflammation throughout the abdominal cavity. This sets off an
acute inflammation of the peritoneum.
Symptoms
Peritonitis is a very painful condition accompanied by vomiting and
a racing pulse rate. The abdomen becomes swollen and tight like a
board. The patient's life is in danger at this point and must be hospitalized
immediately. Provided the patient is in good health otherwise, a skillful
surgeon will have a good chance to pull the patient through.
