Chinese Herbal Formulas

For Regulating Stagnant Chi

  • Poria cocos (7 parts)
  • Bupleurum root (4 parts)
  • Atractylodes (4 parts)
  • Chaste berries (4 parts)
  • Dong quai (4 parts)
  • Peony root (3 parts)
  • Cyperus rhizome (3 parts)
  • Black haw bark (3 parts)
  • Wild yam (3 parts)

  • Green bitter orange peel (2 parts)
  • Ligusticum wallichii (2 parts)
  • Mint leaves (2 parts)
  • Gastrodia (1 part)
  • This is used for mood regulation, depression, stagnant liver chi, nervousness, uneasiness, chest pains, digestive upset, abdominal distention, belching, gas, nausea, candida, constipation, and many menstrual problems including premenstrual syndrome, irregular periods, and breast distention. It also helps hypertension and hysteria.


    Ma Huang Decoction

  • Ma Huang (6-9 gms)
  • Cinnamon branch (6-9 gms)
  • Apricot seed (6-9 gms)
  • Licorice (3-6 gms)
  • This formula helps fever, chills, headache, aching, common cold, cough, no perspiration, and asthma. If there is perspiration, headache, nasal congestion or cough with profuse phlegm, eliminate cinnamon from the formula.


    Cinnamon Branch Combination


    The following formula is for a weaker individual who has profuse perspiration and coldness.
  • Cinnamon branch (6-9 gms)
  • Peony root (6-9 gms)
  • Licorice (3-6 gms)
  • Jujube dates (3-5 pieces)
  • Fresh ginger (3-4 slices)
  • Formula for the common cold, flu, fever, headache, intolerance of wind, spontaneous perspiration and weakness. It is also helpful for morning sickness, postpartum treatment, and various skin disorders such as eczema, frostbite, tinea capitis (a fungal skin disease of the scalp). When stiff neck and shoulders are also present, add pueraria root (kudzu), (6-9 gms).


    Simple Laxative Formula

  • Rhubarb root (3-6 gms)
  • Ginger root (1-2 gms)
  • Licorice root (1-2 gms)
  • Cascara sagrada may be substituted for the rhubarb if liver stagnation, digestive weakness and general debility are present, since it is more tonic with Western sense than rhubarb. More info on constipation.


    Chinese White Tiger Decoction


    Gypsum and Marshmallow Decoction:
  • Gypsum, powdered (15 gms)
  • Rice (10 gms)
  • Marshmallow root (5 gms)
  • American Ginseng (3 gms)
  • Licorice root (2 gms)
  • Gypsum is specific for lowering rapidly rising and severe high fevers including those associated with meningitis and encephalitis, pneumonia, measles, diabetes and sunstroke.

    In treating acute diseases, take along with light, simple vegetable diet (including thin rice porridge, cereal and warm vegetable soups).


    Traveler's Joy

    The following remedy is used to treat food stagnation and is useful for travel sickness, weak digestion, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, morning sickness, bloating and cramps.

Dosage: for general fluid balance and elimination take 2 or more tablets 3 times per day with warm water. For urinary inflammation, take 2 tablets every 2 hours with 2 echinacea tablets.

It has a cooling energy and also helps with cramps, premenstrual syndrome, moodiness and anxiety. For difficult, chronic menstrual problems, take this formula after ovulation and until menstruation (formula without chaste tree berries should be taken after menstruation until ovulation. Dosage: As a tonic, take 2 tablets 3 times per day as needed. For acute conditions take 2 tablets every 2 hours with warm water. Usually not recommended for pregnant women.
